Hwang Hae-bong is the holder of National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 116, Hwahyejang (Shoe Making). He comes from a family of traditional shoemakers spanning five generations and learned the craft from his grandfather, Hwang Han-gap, who was the last Hwahyejang to serve the Joseon royal court. Since the 1970s, he has devoted himself to traditional footwear making and restoration, recreating various types of royal footwear, including jeokseok, cheongseok, and mokhwa. He received the Presidential Award at the Korea Traditional Crafts Competition in 1999 and was designated as a holder of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2004. The making of a single pair of shoes involves at least seventy-two stages of craftsmanship, and he continues to follow the traditional practice of naturally air-drying cowhide. He is now passing the craft on to his two sons and hopes to establish a museum dedicated to preserving and sharing the cultural value of traditional Korean footwear.
