The peony, admired for its exquisite beauty, is known as the “King of Flowers” (Hwawang, 花王), or the “flower among flowers.” With its splendid and elegant appearance, it has long symbolized wealth, honor, and prosperity. As a flower closely associated with the royal court, the peony was frequently used in court banquets and ceremonial occasions, particularly in naejinyeon, royal banquets centered on the women of the inner court. Royal families of the Silla and Goryeo dynasties also held peonies in high esteem, enjoying their collection and appreciation as a refined cultural pursuit.

In East Asia, the chrysanthemum has traditionally symbolized reclusion and steadfast integrity, conveying the virtues of purity, fidelity, integrity, and nobility. It is regarded as a flower of reclusion: planted in early spring, it remains hidden beneath the soil before blooming in late autumn or early winter, when other flowers have withered. It thus withdraws from the world, only to reveal its beauty at the very end. The renowned scholar Jeong Yak-yong (Dasan, 1762–1836) also deeply cherished the chrysanthemum, describing it as beautiful without being alluring, and pure without being cold.

Sugangjae (壽康齋) is the oldest structure within the Nakseonjae area of Changdeokgung Palace. First constructed in 1785 (the ninth year of King Jeongjo’s reign), it initially served as a royal study and a learning space for the Crown Prince. During the reign of King Sunjo, when Crown Prince Hyomyeong served as regent, Sugangjae was used as his detached residence. It later became the residence of Queen Dowager Sunwon. Princess Deokhye, the daughter of Emperor Gojong, returned from Japan in 1962 and resided here until her passing on April 21, 1989.

Reflecting Sugangjae’s historical significance as a space inhabited by royal women—most recently Queen Dowager Sunwon and Princess Deokhye—the Chrysanthemum Flower Vase, symbolizing reclusion, purity, and nobility, and the Peony Flower Vase, the “flower among flowers,” have been placed here together.
