Jo Bok-rae Somokjang, Gyeongsangnam-do Intangible Cultural Heritage
Chantak (Traditional Korean Cabinet), Zelkova, Ailanthus Wood, Paulownia, Lacquer, 112×26×125cm, 2026
Jo Bok-rae is a holder of Gyeongsangnam-do Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 29, Somokjang (Woodworking). Since entering the craft of traditional woodworking in 1979, he has spent over forty years preserving traditional techniques such as joinery and the use of traditional adhesive made from croaker fish swim bladders. He works with domestic woods such as zelkova, paulownia, and persimmon, allowing the natural grain and patterns of the wood to guide the form of each piece. His nail-free joinery and long natural drying process bring out both the inherent beauty and durability of the wood. His many honors include a citation at the 1999 Korea Traditional Crafts Competition, an award from the Cultural Heritage Administration, being named Gyeongsangnam-do’s Top Artisan in 2011, and his designation as an Intangible Cultural Heritage holder in 2016. He now carries on the craft together with his son, sharing the value of Somokjang through exhibitions and education.
