Gyeongmunyeom(Geometric Pattern Bamboo Blind), 150 x 170cm
Yeomjang(Bamboo Blind Making) is the term for a craftsman who makes blinds out of various materials such as reeds and hemp stalks, especially bamboo. Blinds were necessary for life in Korean traditional houses called hanok. They were used in summer to block the strong sunlight and keep the people inside cool; they also served to prevent people from looking inside.
Cho Daeyong comes from a family that has practiced Yeomjang in Tongyeong for four generations. He received the President’s Award at the 1995 Korea Traditional Crafts Competition and has received a total of fourteen awards in various competitions. He primarily makes bamboo blinds and is particularly skilled in joreumjil, the traditional technique of finely splitting bamboo into slats as thin as 0.7–0.9 mm, as well as in creating intricate patterns such as the tortoise-shell motif (Gwimun).
