Jung Soo-hwa
[Chiljang (Lacquerware)], National Intangible Cultural Heritage
Aegi-jang (Small Chest), Lacquer
Master Jung Soo-hwa, honored as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage artist, has revived the nearly forgotten art of traditional lacquer purification. He has played a key role in advancing Korean lacquerware, celebrated for its rich, lustrous, and mysterious colors. His craftsmanship is so highly regarded that he was chosen to lacquer the ritual tables in the main hall of Jongmyo Shrine, solidifying his reputation as Korea’s foremost chiljang (lacquerware master). In 1899, during Prince Heinrich’s visit to Korea, Master Jung faithfully recreated and displayed a piece that had originally been presented as a gift from King Gojong. The items made for the Joseon royal family are distinguished not by their flashy appearance but by their elegant and refined beauty.
