Jang Dongsoo Ceramics
General’s Statue, Variable Installation, Mixed Soil, Tile-Firing Technique, 2025–2026
Jang Dongsoo continues the tradition of Ido tea bowls, a lineage broken by the Japanese invasions of the late sixteenth century. He researches and restores the forms and techniques of the Ungcheon kilns of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries during the Joseon Dynasty, recreating traditional firing methods from the early Joseon period to revive the original forms of ceramics imbued with the spirit of his ancestors. Through this process, he created an original sculptural form known as the “General Figure,” inspired by japsang, guardian figures once placed on tiled roofs to ward off fire and misfortune and protect a space. Beyond their formal beauty, the General Figures carry a protective symbolism, offering comfort for both collective memory and personal solitude in the present day. He graduated from the Department of Ceramic Culture and Design at Seoul National University of Technology, now the Department of Ceramic Art at Seoul National University of Science and Technology. He has held solo exhibitions including Fence Dance (2025) and an exhibition at Cultural Space Jeonghyangjae (2024), and has participated in group exhibitions such as the 7th Emptiness and Sharing Festival: Dwelling in Silence (2024, Gwangju Archdiocesan Office, Gwangju). He currently runs Ungsanyo in Mungyeong.
