Wanghusu
Wanghusu is a decorative ornament attached to the back of the king’s ceremonial robe. This work was created with reference to historical texts and visual records related to Wanghusu. The Daesu(grand ceremonial cord) was made from hard-twisted red silk thread and woven with a repeating diamond pattern using the Dahoe(traditional silk thread braiding) technique. The Sosu in three colors—blue, red, and green—were created from silk threads dyed with indigo, safflower, and fresh indigo, respectively, and woven using the Gwangdahoe technique(wide flat dahoe technique). The tassels in each color were completed using the Gyeopttalgi-sul(layered tassel technique). The cords of the Daedae were also woven using the plain-weave Dahoe technique.
Nine-Rank Myeonryugwan
During the Joseon Dynasty, kings wore the Myeonbok(ceremonial robe) together with a Myeonryugwan(ceremonial crown) with nine strands. The nine strands of five-colored beads hanging at the front and back symbolized the need to temper overly discerning judgment and cultivate an attitude of tolerance and inclusivity. The beaded strands were made of Dahoe (traditional silk thread braiding) in five colors—blue, red, yellow, black, and white—with beads threaded and suspended in the sequence: red, white, blue, yellow, black, red, white, blue, and yellow. The Jasaek-ryu(purple strands) were made using a divided Dahoe technique with two separate cords, designed to pass through the Geumgyuhwa. These strands functioned to secure the crown by being tied beneath the chin. The Jusaek-ryu(red strands) were made using a circular Dahoe technique with a central opening, allowing them to be attached to the Geumjamdo.
