Lee Taesoo Sculpture
Stone composition 022, Mixed media(Paint on EPS, Paint on Steel), 260x160x170cm, 2022
Contemporary artist Lee Taesoo majored in environmental sculpture at the University of Seoul. Finding the physical weight of his early metal sculptures limiting, he began exploring new approaches to form. At the core of his practice is an inquiry into the “gap between appearance and reality.” He focuses on the discrepancy between an object’s visible image and its actual materiality — the contradictions and substitutions inherent in perception — inviting viewers to experience the disjunction between what they see and what is real. He explains that, from the perspective that “nature is not a fixed entity but something made familiar through the accumulation of time,” the boundary between the natural and the artificial is continually being redefined. His work experiments with translating the formal language of the digital age into analog materials. Through this process, he proposes a new paradigm for sculpture and invites us to reflect on the boundaries between the material and the immaterial, the natural and the artificial.
