국가무형유산 채상장 서신정 선생은 1975년 지정되어 오래기간 얇게 저민 대나무에 다채로운 색을 물들여 다양한 문양으로 엮어낸 전통 고급 채상을 만들어 오고 있다. 채상은 예전 왕실부터 양반 서민계층 모두에게 유행한 품목이었으며, 다산 정약용 선생은 색채(彩)자가 쓰이는 것인데 어찌나 결이 매끄럽고 고운지 색채(彩)대신 비단채(綵)를 붙여 비단같은 상자라 부르기도 했다.
이를 이어받아 아들인 김승우 이수자가 현대적인 감각을 가미해 옻칠채상을 만들어 다양한 작업을 이어오고 있다.

Master Seo Sin-jung has been crafting traditional high-quality chaesangs(bamboo cases), which were recognized as a cultural treasure in 1975, for many years. These cases are skillfully woven from thin strips of bamboo, dyed in vibrant colors to create intricate patterns. In the past, chaesangs were popular among both the royal court and commoners alike. The renowned scholar Jeong Yak-yong (Dasan) was so impressed by the smoothness and fine craftsmanship of these boxes that he referred to them as “silk-like boxes,” using the Chinese character “綵” (silk) instead of “彩” (color). Carrying on this tradition, Seo’s son and certified successor, Kim Seung-woo, has brought a contemporary sensibility to the craft, creating lacquered chaesang that expand the possibilities of this time-honored art form.
