Park Jong-gun is a master craftsman recognized as the holder of Korea’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 60, Jangdojang (ornamental knife making). Carrying on the legacy of his late father, Park Yong-gi, he is the third generation in his family to devote his life to this craft. Park is widely known for blending centuries-old techniques with a modern artistic touch, keeping the tradition both alive and evolving. With a background in fine arts, he adds layers of storytelling to each piece, transforming the Jangdo from a simple blade into a cultural treasure filled with artistry and meaning. Creating a single dagger requires about 177 precise steps, all done by hand. Through demonstrations and teaching, Park shares not just the process, but also the spirit and value behind it with wider audiences. Based at the Gwangyang Jangdo Museum and its training center, he leads programs that open traditional culture to the public and ensure its future. Today, Park works alongside his wife and son, continuing the craft together as a family. Through their collaboration, they seek to carry forward the Jangdo tradition while passing on the timeless values it represents—loyalty, honor, and integrity—into contemporary life.
