국가 무형유산 나전장 이수자 박성열 작가는 옻칠로 작업하는 칠예가다. 오랜 역사를 가진 옻칠이라는 재료를 어떻게 이해하고 해석할 것인가를 오랜 고민 끝에 옻칠이 가진 고무질의 성질을 활용해 엿가락처럼 칠을 늘이는 연칠기법을 개발했다.

Park Seong-yeol is a lacquer artist and a certified trainee in Najeonjang(Mother-of-pearl Inlaying), one of Korea’s National Intangible Cultural Heritages. His work is rooted in Ottchil—traditional Korean lacquer with a history stretching back thousands of years.
Fascinated by the unique qualities of this material, Park asked himself how lacquer could be understood and expressed in new ways. Through years of experimentation, he developed the Yeonchil technique, a method that uses lacquer’s natural elasticity to stretch it like taffy.
