Moon Jae Pil is a Chiljang (Lacquerware Making) artisan who carries on a transmission lineage from Jeon Seong-gyu to Sim Bu-gil and Jung Soo-hwa. Since 1992, he has studied the traditional techniques of lacquer purification under Jung Soo-hwa, holder of National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 113 in Chiljang. Lacquer has a long history, and Korea developed its own distinctive lacquer and mother-of-pearl lacquerware techniques from the Three Kingdoms period onward. As a natural material, lacquer offers antibacterial, preservative, waterproof, deodorizing, flame-retardant, and adhesive properties, and the beauty and practical value of traditional lacquer craft have long been recognized. Moon has received numerous awards for his active artistic practice, including the President’s Award of the Korea Traditional Craft Industry Promotion Association in 2001 and a Special Selection at the National Craft Competition. In recognition of his clear transmission lineage, capacity to pass the craft on to the next generation, and the cultural value of traditional lacquer techniques, he was designated a Chungcheongnam-do Intangible Cultural Heritage holder.
