Moonassi Korean Painting
GWANSEOKDO (A Painting of Viewing Stones), 70 × 140 cm, diptych
GWANINDO (A Painting of Viewing People), 70 × 140 cm, diptych
Moonassi, whose given name is Kim Dae-hyun, was born in Seoul in 1980 and graduated from the Department of Oriental Painting at Hongik University. He is a Korean contemporary artist whose name, “Moonassi,” is drawn from the Buddhist concept of muah, or “no-self,” expressing a wish to move beyond self-centered thinking and remain open to the world. Using only black and white, he portrays the gestures and postures of expressionless figures to capture universal human emotions such as sorrow, joy, and solitude. He has collaborated with global brands and organizations including Hermès, Maison Kitsuné, and The New York Times, and has been active in the international art scenes of Paris, Chicago, New York, and beyond. Rather than conveying a specific message, his work carries a quiet, deep resonance that invites viewers to look inward.
