현대작가 김진아의 작품은 ‘동양의 사유 전통은 나와 세계, 주체와 자연을 별개의 것으로 대립시키지 않는다.’라는 전통에서 출발한다. 그녀는 오래전부터 풀의 이미지를 형상화하는 작업을 해왔다. 풀은 자연을 구성하는 작은 요소이며, 풀이라는 작은 대상에 대한 관찰에서 출발한다. 그런데 흥미로운 것은 그 풀이 단순히 대상으로 머물지 않는다는 점이다. 인간은 저마다 ‘소우주(小宇宙)’로서의 절대적 존재이면서도, 동시에 홀로일 수는 없는 ‘나와 너’의 운명 자체인 것처럼, 풀 역시 같으면서도 저마다 다른 ‘풀들’이라는 점이다. 존재는 혼자가 아니라 늘 ‘함께(with)’ 있다. 김진아의 작업에서의 풀은 ‘나’이면서 ‘너’이다.

Contemporary artist Kim Gina’s work is rooted in the tradition that “Eastern philosophy does not separate the self from the world or the subject from nature.” She has long been engaged in depicting images of grass, a small yet fundamental element of nature. Her work begins with the observation of this humble subject. Interestingly, the grass in her work transcends its role as a mere subject. Just as every human being is an absolute entity, a “microcosm,” yet inherently part of the interconnected “I and You” relationship, grass too is individual yet part of a collective. Existence is never solitary but always “with” others. In Kim Gina’s work, grass symbolizes both “me” and “you.”
