국가무형유산 채상장 전승교육사 김영관 작가는 서신정 선생과 부부사이이다. 오래기간 얇게 저민 대나무에 다채로운 색을 물들여 다양한 문양으로 엮어낸 전통 고급 채상을 함께 만들어 오고 있다. 채상은 예전 왕실부터 양반 서민계층 모두에게 유행한 품목이었으며, 다산 정약용 선생은 색채(彩)자가 쓰이는 것인데 어찌나 결이 매끄럽고 고운지 색채(彩)대신 비단채(綵)를 붙여 비단같은 상자라 부르기도 했다.

Kim Young-kwan is a certified successor-instructor of ch’aesangjang, the traditional Korean craft of weaving fine bamboo boxes. Together with his wife, master artisan Seo Shin-jeong, he continues this time-honored art, delicately shaving bamboo into paper-thin strips, dyeing them in brilliant colors, and weaving them into elegant geometric patterns. For centuries, ch’aesang boxes were treasured across Korean society, from the royal court to the households of scholars and commoners. The great thinker Jeong Yak-yong once admired their beauty so highly that he wrote: the bamboo was so smooth and refined that one might replace the word for “color” with the word for “silk”, calling it “a box as fine as silk.”
