Kim Sy-young [Black Ceramics]
Kim Sy-young is an artist dedicated to crafting Goryeo black porcelain, a tradition that was lost during the Joseon Dynasty. Known as heukyuja or heukja, these ceramics are distinguished by their ink-black glaze. Historical records indicate that black porcelain was produced alongside celadon during the Goryeo Dynasty, but the craft did not survive into the Joseon period. While Goryeo celadon and Joseon white porcelain are well-known today, Goryeo black porcelain remains relatively obscure. Ceramics, an art form created through fire, are the foundation of East Asian art. Often called the “Alchemist of Flame,” Kim Si-young has spent over 35 years perfecting the art of black porcelain. His excellence in craftsmanship has earned him the Order of Cultural Merit in South Korea, and his large 52 cm black porcelain moon jar is part of the collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in the United Kingdom.
