Kim Kiho Geumbakjang, National Intangible Cultural Heritage
Subokdangui (Ceremonial Jacket with Longevity and Happiness Motifs), Length 75 cm, Sleeve Length 76.5 cm, Silk decorated with gold leaf, 2007
Kim Kiho, holder of National Intangible Cultural Heritage, Geumbakjang (Gold Leaf Imprinting), is the son of the late holder Kim Deok-hwan. Geumbakjang, or gold leaf imprinting, refers to a technique of applying decorative patterns on fabric with thin gold sheets. Nowadays, women’s traditional wedding costumes feature such patterns. Gold foil designs are produced by stamping the glued surface of a pattern block onto fabric, pressing thin gold sheets against the glued patterns before they dry, and removing the leftover sheet outside the patterns.
Kim Kiho continues the traditional gold leaf craft through a five-generation lineage dating back to the reign of King Cheoljong in 1856: first-generation Kim Wan-hyeong, second-generation Kim Won-sun, third-generation Kim Kyung-yong, fourth-generation Kim Deok-hwan, and fifth-generation Kim Kiho. Since 1856, he has continued his gold leaf work at Geumbagyeon, a traditional gold leaf craft workshop located in Bukchon Hanok Village, Jongno-gu, Seoul. Kim Kiho was officially designated as a holder of National Intangible Cultural Heritage in Geumbakjang on October 24, 2018.
