곽훈 [회화]
곽훈(1941~)은 서울대학교 미술대학 서양화과를 졸업하고 김구림, 김차섭 등과 함께 AG 운동의 창립멤버이다. 1975년 미국으로 도미하여 1982년 LA 시립미술관에서 ‘New Comers’ 작가로 선정되어 미국 서부에서 데뷔한다. 한국인의 특유한 정체성과 독자성을 서양 현대미술로 재해석하는 ‘코리안 디아스포라’ 혹은 ‘코리안 샤먼’의 1세대 작가로서, 백남준, 김수자, 양혜규, 서도호와 함께 해외에서 활발히 활동하며 ‘코리안 노마드’ 로 명명될 한국작가들과 더불어 세계 속의 한국 미술의 아이덴티티를 정립할 때 반드시 언급되어야 할 작가이다. 곽훈 작업의 특징은 미국과 아시아, 두 개의 대륙에서 관찰하며 형성된 작가의 범 세계적 인류관 그 자체이다. 즉 윤회, 열반 같은 동양의 세계관과 신들의 영역을 넘나드는 그리스 로마신화의 서구적인 세계관이 곽훈만의 독특한 상상력으로 재해석되어 회화라는 가장 원시적인, 그러나 가장 강력한 인간의 시각예술의 방식과 태도로 완성되는 것이다. 끊임없는 자기개혁과 노력으로, 동양인의 투철한 정신세계을 지적이고 감각적 회화로 표현해내는 곽훈은 한국미술사에서 매우 독보적인 세계관을 완성시킨 화가이다.

Kwak Hoon [Painting]
Kwak Hoon (1941~) graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Seoul National University and was a founding member of the AG movement, alongside artists like Kim Ku-lim and Kim Cha-seop. In 1975, he moved to the United States and made his American debut in 1982 when he was selected as a “Newcomer” artist by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. As a first-generation artist of the “Korean Diaspora” or “Korean Shaman,” Kwak is known for reinterpreting Korean identity and individuality through the lens of Western contemporary art. Along with renowned artists like Nam June Paik, Kimsooja, Haegue Yang, and Do Ho Suh, Kwak is a key figure in defining the identity of Korean art on the global stage, often associated with the “Korean Nomads.” Kwak’s work is distinguished by his global humanistic perspective, shaped by his experiences across both American and Asian continents. He uniquely fuses Eastern philosophies, such as reincarnation and nirvana, with the Western mythology of Greek and Roman gods, reimagining these themes through his distinctive creativity. His art, expressed through painting—a primal yet powerful visual medium—seamlessly blends these diverse worldviews. Through relentless self-reinvention and dedication, Kwak Hoon has crafted a profoundly intellectual and sensory expression of Eastern spirituality, establishing himself as a painter with a truly unique vision in the history of Korean art.
