The late Cheon Hanbong, known by his ho, Docheon, was born in Tokyo in 1933 and began his ceramic career in 1946, devoting more than seventy years to the craft. He founded Mungyeongyo in 1972, was named a Master Craftsman of Korea in 1995, and was designated as a Gyeongsangbuk-do Intangible Cultural Heritage holder in 2006. As one of Korea’s leading Sagijang artisans, he left a lasting mark on the history of Korean ceramics. Throughout his life, he explored the spirit embodied in earth, fire, and the traditional Korean tea bowl. A tea bowl is more than a vessel for serving tea; it brings together the texture of clay, the traces of fire, and the handmade form, embodying the simple and restrained beauty of traditional Korean ceramics. His life and work stand as a lasting testament to an artisan who dedicated himself to preserving the roots and spirit of Korea’s ceramic tradition.
