최성우 [궁중채화 이수자] / 궁중채화 서울랩
채화綵花는 「비단 등으로 만든 꽃」을 의미하며 주로 궁중의 향연과 의례를 장식했다. 궁중채화는 국가무형유산 궁중채화장 황수로 박사가 100여년 이상 단절된 우리의 채화를 고증을 통해 복원하였다. 채화는 사람의 손이 닿아야 피는 꽃이다. 자연의 꽃을 모방하는 것이 아니라 자연을 대상으로 하는 공예창작물이다.
궁중채화 서울랩은 국가무형유산 궁중채화 이수자 최성우가 궁중채화를 교육하고 더욱 창발하기 위해 설립된 연구실이다. 현대미술가, 식물학자, 공예가, 문화기획자등과 함께 채화의 현대적 확장 가능성을 모색하고 있다.
< 윤회매 : 백매 – 밀랍화 >는 벌이 꽃에서 꿀을 채취해 꿀에서 밀랍이 생기는데 그 밀랍으로 다시 꽃, 매화를 만드는 것으로 이를 윤회매輪回梅라고 한다. 조선후기 실학자 이덕무의 청관장전서 중의 「윤회매십전輪回梅十箋」에 나오는 밀랍화를 신원동 작가의 달항아리에 새로운 방법으로 창작 설치 하였다.

Choi Sung-woo [Certified Trainee of Gungjung Chaehwa] / Gungjung Chaehwa Seoul Lab
Chaehwa (綵花) refers to “silk flowers,” traditionally used to adorn royal items and events in the Korean court. Gungjung Chaehwa, a royal flower craft, was revived by Dr. Hwang Soo-ro, a National Intangible Cultural Heritage holder, who painstakingly restored this art form after it had been lost for over a century. Unlike natural flowers, chaehwa are handcrafted works of art that offer creative interpretations of nature, rather than simple imitations.
The Gungjung Chaehwa Seoul Lab was founded by Choi Sungwoo, a certified trainee of Gungjung Chaehwa, to teach and further develop this traditional craft. The lab works with contemporary artists, botanists, craftsmen, and cultural planners to explore the modern possibilities of chaehwa.
(Yunhoe Mae: White Plum Blossom – Wax Flower is an artwork where beeswax, produced from nectar collected by bees, is used to create a flower—specifically a plum blossom. This process is known as Yunhoe Mae (輪回梅), which translates to “Recycled Plum Blossom.” Inspired by the wax flowers described in the “Yunhoe Mae Sipjeon” (輪回梅十箋) from the writings of late Joseon dynasty scholar Lee Deok-mu, artist Shin Won-dong has reinterpreted and installed this concept within a moon jar, employing a modern technique.)
