조기정 [청자] – 광주광역시 무형유산 / 조장현 [청자]
도예가 고현(古現) 조기정(曺基正)은 1939년 광주에서 태어나 전남대학교 법대를 졸업한 뒤 고려청자의 비색(翡色)에 매료되어 도예가의 길에 들어섰다. 1966년 첫 개인전(광주 YMCA) 이후 ’67년부터 무등도요를 개설하여 도예작업에 정진하였으며, 1989년ㆍ1991년 동경에서 개인전을 갖기도 하였다. 전국은 물론 일본 도요지들을 누비며 고려청자 재현에 힘썼고, 태토 유약 등의 원료에 대한 연구를 계속하여 1987년『綠靑磁 小考』를 출간하기도 하였다. 1986년 전라남도무형문화재 제10호(청자도공 기능보유자)로 지정되었다가 광주광역시 지방문화재 제5호로 변경되었다. 1988년 금호예술상을 수상하였고, 1997년 광주 광산구 연산동에 ‘고현 도예관’을 건립하여 청자 재현작업에 혼신을 다하다 2007년 72세로 작고하였다.

Jo Ki-jung [Celadon] – Gwangju Metropolitan City Intangible Cultural Heritage / Jo Jang-hyun [Celadon]
Ceramic artist Jo Ki-jung (pen name Gohyeon), born in 1939 in Gwangju, graduated from the law school of Chonnam National University. He became fascinated with the jade-green color (bisaek) of Goryeo celadon and decided to pursue a career in ceramics. After holding his first solo exhibition at the Gwangju YMCA in 1966, he founded Mudeung Pottery Studio in 1967, dedicating himself to pottery work. He held solo exhibitions in Tokyo in 1989 and 1991 and traveled extensively across Korea and Japan to study and recreate Goryeo celadon. Jo continued researching the materials for clay and glazes and published A Study of Green Celadon in 1987. Initially designated as Jeollanam-do Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 10 (Master of Celadon Pottery) in 1986, his designation was later changed to Gwangju Metropolitan City Local Cultural Heritage No. 5. Jo received the Kumho Art Award in 1988 and built the Gohyeon Ceramics Hall in 1997 in Yeonsan-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, where he devoted his life to recreating celadon until his passing in 2007 at the age of 72.

조장현 작가는 무형문화재 고현(古現) 조기정 선생의 둘째아들인 현대 도예가로, 미국 캘리포니아주립대학에서 순수회화를 전공했지만 결국 부친으로부터 고려청자 기법을 전수받았다. 현재 고려청자 재현과 도자기 문화 발전에 기여한 무형문화유산 고현(古現) 조기정 선생이 제자를 양성하고 배출한 무등도요를 이어받아 아버지의 호를 이어 제 2대 고현이 됐다. 현재 고려청자 기법을 계승하며, 한국 고려청자의 현대화와 도자 개발에 큰 노력을 하고 있다. 그의 대표적 전시로는 ‘징’(澄)(2018년 중국 북경 노고갤러리), ‘의의동망’(衣衣東望·2019년 중국 시안 MOL 갤러리), ‘격경호’(擊磬乎·2019년 서울 갤러리민) 등이 꼽히고 있다.

Jo Jang-hyun is a contemporary ceramic artist and the second son of Master Jo Ki-jung (pen name: Kohyeon), an Intangible Cultural Heritage holder. Although he initially studied Fine Arts at California State University, he eventually embraced the Goryeo celadon techniques passed down from his father. Jo Jang-hyun now carries on his father’s legacy, taking over Mudeung Kiln, the workshop where Master Jo Ki-jung trained and mentored students. He plays a significant role in reviving Goryeo celadon and advancing ceramic culture. Known as the second Kohyeon, Jo Jang-hyun is committed to preserving traditional Goryeo celadon techniques while also modernizing and innovating Korean celadon. Some of his notable exhibitions include “Jing” (澄) at Nuoguang Gallery in Beijing, China (2018), “Yiyidongwang” (衣衣東望) at MOL Gallery in Xi’an, China (2019), and “Gyeokgyeongho” (擊磬乎) at Gallery Min in Seoul (2019).
