이재삼 작가는 한국을 대표하는 목탄화가로, 자연과 인간의 감성을 깊이 있게 표현하는 작품 세계를 구축한 작가이다.
강원도 영월 출신이며, 강릉대학교 미술학과와 홍익대학교 대학원 서양화과를 졸업하였다. 목탄을 주요 기법으로 활용하여 달빛, 소나무, 폭포, 대나무, 물안개 등 자연의 정경을 주제로 작업한다.
대표작 『Dalbit-Moonshine』은 국립현대미술관에 소장되어 있으며, 달빛에 비친 자연의 감성을 사실적이면서도 감성적으로 표현했다. 2017년 미메시스 아트 뮤지엄에서 열린 개인전 『달빛: 이재삼 전』에서 다양한 자연 풍경을 목탄으로 재현하며 자연과 인간의 내면 교감을 탐구하였다.
작가는 목탄을 단순한 재료가 아닌 자연과 인간의 감성을 담는 매개체로 보며, 깊은 사유를 작품에 담는다. 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 경기도미술관 등 국내 주요 미술관에 작품이 소장되어 있으며, 국내외에서 활발히 전시 활동을 이어가고 있다.

Lee Jae-sam is widely regarded as one of Korea’s foremost charcoal painters, creating works that beautifully capture both the grandeur of nature and the depth of human emotion. Born in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province of Korea, he studied painting at Gangneung National University and went on to earn a master’s degree in Western painting at Hongik University.
Working primarily with charcoal, Lee transforms familiar natural scenes—moonlight, pine trees, waterfalls, bamboo, and drifting mist—into images that feel at once real and dreamlike. His celebrated piece Dalbit–Moonshine, now housed in the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, shows the quiet poetry of nature bathed in moonlight. In his 2017 solo exhibition Moonlight: Lee Jae-sam at the Mimesis Art Museum, he presented a series of charcoal landscapes that explored the deep emotional dialogue between nature and the human spirit.
For Lee, charcoal is not simply a material but a vessel for thought and feeling, a medium through which he searches for a quiet connection between people and the natural world. His works are part of the collections of major Korean museums, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Seoul Museum of Art, and the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, and he continues to share his art through exhibitions in Korea and abroad.
