신미경은 서울대학교 미술대학과 대학원에서 조소를 전공하고 런던 슬레이드 미술대학 대학원에서 조각을 공부했다. 한국과 유럽을 오가며 활동하는 작가는 다양한 문화권을 대표하는 역사적 유산을 비누로 재현하는 작업으로 국제적인 주목을 받아왔다. 그리스 시대의 조각상부터 아시아의 불상과 도자기에 이르기까지 미술사를 장식해온 특별한 유물을 평범한 비누로 구현하는 그의 작품은 영속적 시간과 대비되는 재료를 통해 영원과 절대에 대해 반문한다. 가소성 있는 비누를 매개로 과거와 현재를 흥미롭게 잇는 그의 작업은 특정한 역사적 시기나 지역 혹은 관념이라는 고정된 맥락에서 벗어나 새로운 관계 맺기를 제안한다.

Shin Mee–kyoung studied sculpture at Seoul National University’s College of Fine Arts and its graduate school, followed by advanced studies at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Working between Korea and Europe, Shin has garnered international acclaim for her unique approach of recreating historical artifacts from various cultures using soap. Her works, which include Greek statues, Asian Buddhist sculptures, and ceramics, are all meticulously crafted from this everyday material. By using a medium that contrasts sharply with the timelessness of these iconic objects, Shin’s work prompts a rethinking of concepts like eternity and permanence. Through the malleable nature of soap, she weaves together past and present, offering fresh perspectives that go beyond specific historical periods, regions, or fixed ideas.
