김이수 작가는 성신여대 서양화과를 졸업하고 미국 뉴욕 프랫 인스티튜트에서 아그네스 마틴 같은 미국 추상표현주의 거장의 영향을 받으며 국내 화단의 일부 보수 진영 평론가들로부터 후기 단색조 회화 작가로 자리매김되기도 했다. 화폭 전면을 같은 색조나 선의 이미지로 채우는 단색조 회화는 국내외 미술 시장에서 한국 현대미술을 대표하는 사조로 소개되어왔다. 김 작가는 이 사조의 맥을 이을 후예로 평가되면서도 단색조 1세대인 1970~80년대 작고 원로 작가들 작법과 다른 관점과 시각으로 2000년대 이후 계속 자기만의 작화 방식을 개발하면서 새로운 색면추상의 세계를 모색해 왔다.

Kim Yi-soo studied painting at Sungshin Women’s University and continued her training at Pratt Institute in New York, where she was influenced by great figures of American Abstract Expressionism such as Agnes Martin. Early in her career, some Korean critics described her as part of the post-monochrome movement, a style known for covering the canvas with a single tone or repeated linear imagery. This movement has often been seen as one of the defining currents of Korean contemporary art on the global stage.
While often recognized as an heir to this tradition, Kim has steadily forged her own path. Since the 2000s, she has developed a distinctive approach that moves beyond the methods of the first generation of monochrome painters from the 1970s and ’80s. Through this evolution, she continues to open new possibilities within the world of color-field abstraction, offering a fresh perspective that is very much her own.
